On May 17 in Marion County, West Virginia, Retton, 57, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of “driving under influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs.” She posted her personal recognizance bond of $1,500 the same day.

HuffPost has reached out to Retton and law enforcement for comment.

Retton, now a mother of four, became the first American to capture the Olympic women’s all-around gold in the ’84 Los Angeles Games. Just 16 years old, she also won two silver and two bronze medals.

“This is serious and this is life,” Retton said later. “And I am so grateful to be here. I am blessed to be here. Because there was a time when they were about to put me on life support.”
