It looks like Indianapolis isn’t letting go of its beef with former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady anytime soon.
On Sunday, Brady appeared at the Indianapolis 500 during a pre-race ceremony to greet attendees when he was met with a wave of boos from the crowd.
But the retired athlete seemed not to bat an eyelid at the residual disdain, simply waving and smiling at the crowd in response.
Brady signed a 10-year contract with Fox Sports to serve as a sports commentator for the network after he retired from the NFL in 2023.
There has been a years-long strife between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots, particularly with Brady at the root of it all.
In 2014, the Colts and Patriots kicked off one of the most fervent rivalries in professional football after they faced off in the AFC Championship Game. The matchup was soiled by the infamous “Deflategate” scandal, in which Brady was accused of breaking NFL rules by using underinflated footballs to gain an unfair advantage.
Social media users on X, formerly Twitter, recalled the rift between the teams and appeared amused over the crowd’s brutal reaction to Brady’s appearance.
“Indy fans still haven’t forgiven him for all those years haha,” one person wrote.
Another user commented, “It’s Indianapolis, what did you expect, especially considering how many times the Patriots eliminated the Colts in the 2000s.”
“Oh the hate remains!!! Love it!” someone else wrote.
A separate user added, “They hold a hard grudge! He should have known better [laughing emoji].”
Earlier this year, Brady shut down rumors that he was ditching his contract with Fox after only a year.
While appearing on the sports radio show “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” he said, “I don’t know where the [gossip] comes from. I know it always says ‘sources close to Brady’ or whatever. But I’ve had the best time at Fox.”
