Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was hospitalized Saturday after being stabbed in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the early morning, then arrested for his alleged role in the incident later in the day.
Sanchez, now a commentator for Fox and Fox Sports 1, is facing charges of battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication, the Indianapolis Metro Police Department said in a statement on social media. The department noted that Sanchez remained hospitalized and had not been booked into jail.
Fox Sports said in a statement made prior to the news of Sanchez’s arrest that he was recovering from the injury and in stable condition.
“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call about a “disturbance in an alley” around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to local news outlet WTHR. The call noted one person had been stabbed and that another had been injured.
The disturbance reportedly occurred outside a pub near the intersection of Washington Street and North Senate Avenue, per WTHR. An unidentified suspect in the stabbing has been arrested, according to the outlet.
The former USC great played eight seasons in the NFL after being selected fifth overall in the 2009 draft by the New York Jets. He guided the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship games in his first two seasons.
Sanchez also played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos. His last appearance in the NFL came during a regular-season game with the Commanders in 2018.
